What is the University of Windsor doing to support students impacted by the conflict in Ukraine?

The University of Windsor community is here to support our students impacted by the conflict in Ukraine.  Students who find themselves in financial distress because of the situation will be eligible for support.

For prospective students:

We are waiving all application fees for Ukrainians who have not yet applied to the University of Windsor.

The English Language Improvement Program (ELIP) application fees are also being waived for affected students.

If you are interested in applying, don’t hesitate to contact Peter, our regional recruitment advisor for the region, by email (Peter.Petrichev@uwindsor.ca).

For applicants:

We are providing an expedited review for both new applications from the region, including facilitating admissions following best practices in post-secondary adjudication of candidates from conflict zones, including reviewing available documents or prior learning assessments/video interviews.

For admitted students:

We are waiving all program deposit fees for students who, due to financial distress or banking restrictions, are unable to conduct these financial transactions. Students will still need to meet study permit requirements.

The Government of Canada is prioritizing the processing of study permit      applications.

We are providing additional financial support for students impacted by the conflict in Ukraine. All impacted students with Permanent Resident status in Canada starting in Fall 2022 will be eligible to apply for an open entrance scholarship valued at up to $5,000 renewable over 4 years of study ($2,500 X 8 semesters).

All students impacted by the conflict in Ukraine with Student Visa status in Canada starting in Fall 2022 will be eligible to apply for an open entrance scholarship valued at up to $10,000 renewable over 4 years ($5,000 x 8 semesters).

These scholarships will be in addition to any other open or entrance-scholarship-by-application programs that are currently in place for the 2022-23 academic year. Conditions apply for renewal eligibility which will be communicated at the time of the scholarship offer in mid-May.

For current students:
Students experiencing immediate, urgent financial distress because of the conflict can apply to:

  • Domestic students experiencing financial distress due to the conflict in Ukraine can apply to  the Emergency Bursary Support (Hardship - Domestic). Visa students experiencing financial distress due to the conflict in Ukraine can apply to the Emergency Bursary Support (Hardship - International)
  • To apply, log in to UWinsite Student > Student Homepage > Award Profile and follow the instructions to complete your profile.

Change in spring/summer return home plans due to the conflict
  • International students who cannot travel home because of the conflict should contact the International Student Centre for options to remain on campus, including housing and employment support.

Higher education has a vital role to play in this global moment. We hope that the entire international community will use diplomacy and reconciliation to bring security and peace again to the region. We remain encouraged by the diverse perspectives that international education offers for world peace, justice and understanding.
